Former Bafana Bafana defender Morgan Gould was tough as nails during his playing days.

The 41-year-old played for SuperSport United, Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch, Sekhukhune United and Jomo Cosmos. Having left Ezenkosi in 2008 for Matsatsantsa, Gould immediately became a star in the PSL. His centre-back pairing with Bongani Khumalo was hailed as the best in the league for two years as they helped SuperSport win back-to-back league titles. At the time he joined the Tshwane Giants, they had just won their first-ever PSL title with Gavin Hunt.

Morgan Gould’s form earned him a Bafana cap in 2008 and he would later be included in the 2009 Confederation Cup squad on home soil. The defender did not see much game time with Khumalo and Matthew Booth preferred as Aaron Mokwena’s partners in defence. He was not included in Carlos Alberto Parreira’s final 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup, with the Brazilian picking Siyabonga Sangweni.

Morgan Gould used to ‘pocket’ strikers in his SuperSport days

With Gould’s defensive partner Khumalo leaving for England, United had no stable defence and failed to retain the title they won three times. In 2012, he made a big move to Kaizer Chiefs and that proved to be a success. In his first season, he won two trophies, establishing himself as a leader at the back.

At Chiefs, Morgan Gould and Eric Mathoho were called the ‘Twin Towers’ due to their heights. The 2012/13 season was a success for Amakhosi who possessed no fewer than eight Bafana players. With Stuart Baxter losing the league to Mamelodi Sundowns the next season, the English mentor re-established his defence. He opted to play with five at the back; Tefu Mashamaite joined Mathoho and Gould while Tsepo Masilela and Sboniso Gaxa played on the flanks.

The 2014/15 saw Chiefs winning the league by 69 points having only conceded 14 goals. The departure of captain Mashamaite exposed Morgan Gould the next season. The defender had already past his peak at the point and was only a liability for Amakhosi.

Gould won more than 10 trophies in his career

He eventually left the club to rejoin SuperSport. His return was lukewarm, but nonetheless, he won three trophies with them before leaving. in 2020, Morgan Gould joined Sekhukhune, which would be the last club he played for.

Since retiring, the former defender has now taken the role of a soccer analyst whilst doing motivational talks. He is also an ambassador for Addidas. Last week, Morgan Gould was one of the speakers at the Empowa Youth Week in Sebokeng.
