Orlando Pirates Sporting Club of Namibia have suffered their first ever relegation in their proud history.

This comes after Pirates were beaten 2-0 by African All Stars during the past weekend.

Nicknamed the Buccaneers, just like the Orlando Pirates of South Africa, they only accumulated a measly 26 points.

That embarrassing feat saw them finish the season at a low of 15th in a league with 16 teams.

This means they’re one of three teams that get relegated to the First Division.

Pirates undeniably embarrassed following relegation

Pirates was one of the few teams left that started the league in 1985. Now Tigers FC and African Stars FC will be the only 2 teams that remain in the elite division. These being teams that started it both of which are from Katutura, along with Pirates who are now relegated. The three-time Namibian Premier League champions will be playing in the Southern Stream First Division next season.

The history of Pirates is very intriguing. The name Orlando Pirates SC was proposed by Namibian students, Erkie Claasen and Harald Sam. The duo were studying in South Africa at the time.

Chiefly in 1990, the Buccaneers became the first team to win the newly established Namibia Premiership. They clinched another league title in 2008.

Not enough quality as compared to the past?

Robert Nauseb, Riaan Hanamub and Theophilus Tsowaseb are some of the former Pirates players who have plied their trade in the PSL or NFD.

Funny enough, Hanamub who currently plays for AmaZulu in South Africa has been linked to South Africa’s Pirates. On the other hand, Nauseb is part of a rare list of players who have played for both the Buccaneers and Kaizer Chiefs

It is not clear whether the Pirates from Namibia has a formal relation with that of South Africa. Despite this it is known that the Soweto giant as well Chiefs have a massive fanbase across the border as well.
