Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma was forced to leave the field early on Day 1 of the first Test against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday.

Aiden Markram took over as captain following Bavuma’s departure.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed Bavuma had experienced discomfort in his left hamstring while fielding and was sent for a scan.

A short while later, CSA reported that the scan revealed a left hamstring strain and that the 33-year-old will undergo daily medical evaluations to determine his participation in the remainder of the match.

The second and final Test will take place at Newlands in Cape Ton from 3-7 January 2024.

Earlier, Bavuma won the toss and asked Indian counterpart Rohit Sharma to bat.
