The Mauritian government has reopened their Africa scholarship scheme after the suspension of applications due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scholarship was officially launched back in 2013 and offers students an opportunity to study both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Mauritian universities.
According to Business Insider, between 2013 to 2019 the scholarship saw around 80 students completing their studies. It was thereafter decided to expand its full time on campus programme in 2020, however, when Mauritius reported their first case of covid-19 last year, the scholarship was suspended.
The expansion came with some additions such as including South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). DHET can process and shortlist applicants in their country of citizenship.
The scholarship is open to students who are residents of all member states that make up the African Union (AU) or African Commonwealth countries. These include but are not limited to South Africa and its neighbouring countries Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Mozambique.
Undergraduate and postgraduate (Masters and PHD) students have different application criteria.
The scholarship covers annual tuition fees and other course-related costs of MUR 100 000 which equates to just over R36 000. Students also receive a monthly living allowance of MUR 12 500 equating to about R4500. Students will be refunded for their flight costs.
Business Insider reports that the scholarship will refund students for covid-19 related expenses such as the mandatory 14-day quarantine and associated tests. These costs are covered provided the student progresses through the academic programme.
Applicants first need to apply for a full time – on campus programme at a public higher education institution in Mauritius before submitting documents to DHET.
A completed DHET application form must be submitted to internationalscholarships@dhet.gov.za before 18 April 2021 for successful applicants to begin their studies in August.
The form requires certified copies of the following documents,
