However, these all cost different amounts and do not mention the cost of licencing your actual vehicle disc.

That’s because the cost of licencing a car in South African varies from province to province and depends on the class and weight of the vehicle. We’ll first break down the weight categories that your ride might fall into, then we’ll explore the various online licencing service providers you can use (plus the one we recommend above all else) and their fees.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), anything from scooters to trucks with multiple axles are allowed on Mzansi’s roads. However, for the purpose of 2024 South African car licence renewal we will focus our attention on passenger vehicles weighing between 1 000 kg and 2 500 kg.

For ease of use we’re also only looking at the three provinces with the most road users. Namely, Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. However, we have included links to the six remaining provinces for reference below.

Don’t forget, you have a 21-day grace period to renew an expired car licence. You will not receive a ticket during this time. However, after your 21 days are up, you could be fined on the road, and will be liable for a late licencing penalty fee when you do renew it.

WHAT ABOUT ADDITIONAL SERVICE FEES?

So, there you have a cost breakdown of licencing your vehicle in 2024. But what about the different online service providers who claim to be easier and more convenient? Well, having used the service ourselves recently, we could not recommend eNATIS more highly. It is the most widely used in the South Africa, and a huge benefit is the fact that all data is already automatically linked.

Therefore, we received a notification about an upcoming car licence renewal with weeks to spare. The process is simple and took just minutes online. And the renewed car licence disc was couriered within a week. Cost wise, eNATIS breaks down like this (over and above your licence cost above). We’d recommend ignoring any mail options through the South African Post Office (SAPO), and just going the courier route for just R99. Plus a R72 service fee, that comes to R171 total.

  • Online, delivery via ordinary mail: R28
  • Online, delivery via courier: R99

THIRD-PARTY LICENCE SERVICES

As mentioned earlier, there are dozens of third-party services that have popped up over the years. These include, but are not limited to, Money Market through Shoprite, Checkers and USave store, banks like FNB and others. Cost wise, Money Market costs an admin fee of R110, delivery fee of R75, for a total cost of R185. This excludes the licence cost above, don’t forget.

Other options include:

  • PayCity – R114
  • South African Post Office – R147
  • eNATIS – R171
  • FNB – R171
  • Money Market – R185
  • Spar supermarkets – R199
  • RenewOnline – R215
  • Disky (via WhatsApp) – R240
  • Pick n Pay – R330

As we’ve explored before, PayCity, while being the cheapest, seems to have a poor rating of just 1.65 on Hellopeter. Based on the written reviews, it appears car licence discs don’t always arrive timeously and customers contacting the PayCity don’t get the support they’re after.
